Yarrum the ‘Wedgie’ was born in 2006 and came to us from Alice Springs Desert Park.  He was involved in public display work previously in his career when he was at Cairns Tropical Zoo for about eight years.  So, we were lucky that he’d had some training by the time he arrived at the Sanctuary in June 2016.  He enjoys a good snuggle from Martin and is currently housed in warmer quarters while he gets used to our cooler climate.  He is physically smaller than Quil and weighs approximately 2.5 kg compared to Quil’s weight of around 3.7kg.

Wedge-tailed eagles are Australia’s largest bird of prey. Interestingly, as with all birds of prey, males are smaller than females.  This is described as ‘sexual dimorphism’.
