Skeksi was born to Moonlit Sanctuary’s Barking Owl pair in September 2017. We adopted him in early October and he lived in our house for the first few weeks until he was able to fly and started wreaking havoc with his random flights around the house. Skeksi started participating in bird of prey displays at a very young age and he has been the star of the show with his crazy young owl head movements, which he applies to view his surroundings (some may describe it as a Barking Owl rap dance).
Barking Owls are a medium sized hawk-owl with a similar plumage to Southern Boobook owls. They exist around most of Australia except for central areas. Their name is based on their dog-like ‘woof woof’ call and are also known as the ‘winking owl’, which you can witness when you see Skeksi in action. Sadly, Barking Owl numbers in Victoria have been reported as declining with the last official count noting 50 pairs existing in the wild.
