Mokey was born in 2012 and came to us from NSW from captive bred stock. He has adapted beautifully to Sanctuary life and flies to the glove for food each night, ‘purring’ to us in anticipation of his evening mouse. He is very curious and has a very lively nature, but should also win an award for the ‘Grumpiest-looking Owl in Australia’.
Southern Boobooks are the smallest owls in Australia. They are known for their characteristic call, ‘mopoke’, from which Mokey’s name was derived. These owls feed extensively on insects, but they also take mice, small birds and other small creatures. They nest and roost in tree hollows, therefore, mature trees are of significant conservation value for this species.
